My whole life I have had a passion for dogs. I have always had some kind of pet in my life but dogs have always provided me with a source of happiness, which lead me to volunteer at local shelters early on. In September 2006 I had to make a choice in my life that would take me away from my passion to help our country. I wanted to join the military as a K9 Handler but there were no slots available. Instead, I joined as a Combat Engineer. A year and a half into my first duty station, a Sergeant Major came to our company looking for soldiers to go to Mine Dog School, I jumped into action. In March 2009 my whole life changed. I was living my dream working with K9's and helping our country. One of the greatest things to come out of that training school was a dog that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Her name is MWD Raja.
After getting out of the military I knew undoubtedly what I wanted to do for a living. I started a training program in Saint Robert, MO called K9 Manners.I worked with the Waynesville and Saint Robert's, MO Animal Shelters. I left Missouri, I moved to Harker Heights, Texas in 2012 and started my company, United K9 Academy in 2015. I dedicated volunteer time every week hours to the local dogs shelters to help place dogs in their forever homes. I also volunteered time to help these dogs achieve success at remaining in their new home after adoption.
Today, I currently work with TADSAW (Train A Dog Save A Warrior), working hand in hand with Vets that have PTSD and TBI. A Great benefit of working with the TADSAW Program is getting to help veterans find compatible canine companions from the shelter system. Win-win for both the Vet and the newly adopted dog.One of my favorite passions would be working with aggressive dogs. I also enjoy helping owners to understand why and how dogs act the way they do and to help dog owners achieve the desired behaviors they are seeking from their dog.Training is a passion of mine and I look forward to sharing my years of hands on experience with you.
Meet the Trainers
I cant say that I had the ideal childhood, but what I did have, is animals around me all the time to cheer me up and keep my spirits high.
My stepmother would bring home animals that needed our help. From horses, multiple breeds of dogs, cows and even animals as exotic as Wallabies. Taking care of all the animals was the highlight of my childhood. I would start trying to train anything honestly. I've always loved the idea of having a completely sound relationship with an animal. With all the animals we had, my deepest connection was with the dogs. The way it would make me feel, like they could honestly communicate back with me in a way none of the others could. They truly became my best friends. Needless to say I grew up knowing I would work with animals one day.
Everyday after taking care of our animals, I would work for a lady down the street that had a kennel. It wasn't much but it was extra time that I was out of the house, and that got to spend time with my best friends. Growing up I was pretty shy, always the friend in the corner petting the dog.
Years later I was getting ready to graduate from high school and still didn't know what I wanted to really do with my life. I thought I wanted to be in the military, however that was a very short adventure. So I tried a criminal justice class in college, although it was a lot of fun, it just really wasn't for me either.
The first time I meet a dog trainer, I was hooked. To me, being a dog trainer was like a pipe dream, because the only ones I had seen growing up was the ones you saw on TV. When I got the chance, in 2011, to be one I jumped on it. Although it was only a retail dog training job at Petco, it still got my foot in the door to reach my goals and by the time I reached 21 I was really excited about my dream career!
Although I was taught the in and outs of getting dogs to sit, down, or stay, that wasn't enough. Every dog reacted so different to the training and I had to start thinking outside the box and realized with dog training learning is limitless. There will always be something new to know, learn, and teach the clients, and their owners.
In all good time, I know this will become my primary income and I will be able to put my focus on this 100 Percent. I know there is light at the end of the tunnel and I look forward to what is to come.
