What are the most important criteria for a service dog?

While the United States does not have specific service dog certifications or identification requirements, many public places will request documentation for training. A properly trained service dog should:

  • Exhibit no aggressive behavior
  • Cease sniffing behavior unless released to do so
  • Never beg for food or affection
  • Not show over-excitement and hyperactivity in public
  • Stay focused on Handler
  • Many of other requirements
Service dogs have a very important job to do. Easily distracted or disobedient pets may not be ready to help you when you need it most.
